Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medicine-based technique to deal with a variety of conditions. The theory behind acupuncture treatment is that the healthy functioning of the body is governed by the flow of “qi” (often translated as “energy”) through a system of channels under the skin. When this flow of qi is impaired, illness occurs. By inserting fine needles at various points along the channels, the body’s balance can be restored and the illness resolved. The tiny needles when inserted cause microscopic injuries and this is what triggers the mind to respond.

WHAT IS ACUPUNCTURE?

Acupuncture is an old treatment method that involves the use of very thin needles which are placed through an individual’s skin at specific points on the body, at different depths. Studies have revealed that it can be used to relieve pain and also it can be used for a wide range of other problems.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

One of the main hypotheses shows that acupuncture works by neurohormonal pathways. Basically, you place the needle at specific points in the body and stimulate the nerve. The nerve sends signals to the brain, and the brain releases neural hormones such as beta-Endorphins. The patient may feel euphoric or happy, which increases the pain threshold, and it makes it less painful.

The acupuncturist will talk about your condition before examining your body to identify areas that will react to acupuncture. Next, steel needles will be tapped at specific points into your skin. Don’t worry about the needles, they are sterile, disposable, and as thin as human hair. The needles are inserted at various depths ranging from an inch to a couple of inches. The needles are left there for a few minutes, as per the need.

Acupuncture needles are solid and thinner than medical needles. You’ll only feel a small prick when the practitioner taps each needle. It may sound painful but in fact, it is less painful than getting a vaccine or blood draw. A feel of deep heaviness or numbness is a sign that the treatment is working.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS AND RISKS OF ACUPUNCTURE CARE?

You may be thinking about acupuncture for various reasons – for example, there are some cases where you can seek the treatment of your chronic headaches and sinus pressure. In other words, studies have shown that acupuncture can be used for numerous conditions and symptoms. Below are just a few among many.

  • Allergies
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Chronic pain, often in the neck, back, knees
  • Morning sickness
  • Sprains
  • Strokes

RISKS

Studies revealed that low risk is experienced after acupuncture; this is only if and when a certified acupuncture practitioner handles the sterile needles. Prevalent side effects that may occur after treatment can include and are not limited to soreness and minor bleeding or bruising where the needles were inserted; it is, therefore, important to consult an expert prior to acupuncture treatment because it is not meant for everybody.

The areas in focus are specific anatomic points where fine needles are inserted. There is generally minimal to no pain in the areas and few people may experience a subtle tingling sensation after the session.
